The reasons are twofold. His coffees are outstanding. There aren't many producers who have had their coffees scored at 97 points by Coffee Review. Ashenafi has. Toward the end of 2025 he was appointed as the first ever president of the Ethiopian Speciality Coffee Association. He's a giant of the industry.

Another reason for buying from Ardent are Ashenafi's principles. Ethiopia has been a war torn country for a number of years. One of the obvious outcomes of this is to leave many children without parents. To help with this, Ashenafi opened the Ardent Children's Centre to look after these kids and provide them with a future. There are now two centres looking after 70 children between them. In 2025 we donated $5000 toward this. In October of this year, Ashenafi built and opened a school in Wicho, Sidama, a place where his grandparents still live. We're really proud to support such work.

Kenya Karani AA (250g)

Process: Washed
Varietal: SL34 & SL28
Altitude: 1550 - 1600 MASL
Tasting notes: Rosehip, Green apple and Caramel

The Karani Factory is in the Kabare location of the Gichungu Division of the Kirinyaga County. Situated at the foothills of Mt. Kenya, Kirinyaga County is roughly 112 km from Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, bordering the Embu County to the East, Machakos to the South, Murang’a to the Southwest, and Nyeri to the West.

The locals in this area call Mt. Kenya Kirinyaga, the namesake of the county, meaning the crest of whiteness due to the famous snow-capped peaks. The Karani Factory, or wet mill, is associated with the Kabare Farmers’ Cooperative Society comprising nine other factories within the area. The Karani Factory was built in 1998 when it also opened its doors for processing. Collectively, the 600 members of the Factory grow coffee on 134,000 trees, producing around 455 MT of cherries each year.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0911/9105/0617/files/Karani_Guji_Bundle_2df2316a-2aaa-4ea3-a7bd-a81bbeb8d007.webp?v=1788443050
